The consolidation of an imperial dynasty was publicized in Ancient Rome by minting coins: the obverse showed the image of the ruling emperor and the reverse the image of his designated successor. This denarius was minted by Antoninus Pius (138-161) and bears the portrait of the emperor on its obverse, while the reverse presented Mark Aurelius, who followed his adoptive father as emperor (161-180).
