After the death of Alexander the Great, his generals divided his empire into independent kingdoms and distributed them among themselves. One of them was Lysimachus (323-281 BC), who became king of Thrace.

Lysimachus depicted Alexander himself on the obverse of his coins. The reverse, however, he claimed for himself. It showed Athena seated on a throne, wearing a helmet and armed with a shield and a spear. On her outstretched hand she holds a Nike, a winged goddess of victory, who ist just crowning the name of Lysimachus.
