Over centuries, the Athenian coin design hardly changed. Long after Athenian artists started to form their statues in the classical style, Athena still kept her archaic smile on the coins. This is why it is extremely difficult to date Attic coins.

The owl on the reverse, Athena's attribut, remained unchanged as well; it was the reason why the coins from Athens were called 'owls' in vernacular.
