The first US dollar was minted in 1849 – a tiny little coin of only 13 millimeters in diameter and a weight of less than 2 grams: it was the smallest coin ever to be circulated in the United States. The American population much disliked the coin, as it was easy to lose. A dollar was worth quite a lot at that time. For many workers it represented more than a day's wage.
