Ionia, 1/96 Stater

Ionia, 1/96 Stater (obverse) Ionia, 1/96 Stater (reverse)

This tiny piece of electrum weights 0.12 grams and has a diameter of a mere 4 millimeters. It is the 96th part of a stater, the smallest known fraction of early electrum coinage. Along with whole staters we know of 1/2, 1/3, 1/6, 1/12, 1/24, 1/48 and 1/96 staters. Altogether, there existed thus seven fractions of the stater. This is not so different from modern currencies – the Swiss franc, for instance, has 14 fractions, from the 1000 frank bill to the 5 rappen piece.
