On account of inflation, the farthing had become practically valueless in the early 1950s. As a result their production ceased after 1956 and the coins were demonetized at the end of 1960. This put an end to the long history of the farthing, which had been introduced by Edward I (1272-1307). The name derived from "fourthling," the farthing originally being a quarter penny.
