The half eagle shown here, the golden 5-dollar coin, was very popular among Americans in the 19th century – it was the coin that grandparents gave their grandchildren on Christmas or as birthday presents. At that time 5 dollars still were of considerable value: such a half eagle then had about the same purchasing power as a 100-dollar bill today.
