Portuguese euro-coins show three different designs for each of the three groups of coins. However, they are quite similar in that all contain old Portuguese royal seals. The coins of 1 and 2 euros depict the royal seal of 1144 – at that time, Alfonso the Conqueror reigned over Portugal as the very first Portuguese King (1139–1185).
