After having been closed for more than thirty years on account of wars, the Bernese mint reopened in 1656. That year it issued large numbers of 10, 20 and 30 kreuzer pieces. In 1679 began the striking of taler coins with the Bernese crest on the obverse and a cross-formed monogram on the reverse.
