In 1861 – the year this coin was issued – a terrible fire burnt the city of Glarus to the ground. Over night the town became a huge detritus in which more than 2000 homeless people wandered about. The Swiss population donated about 3 million francs then. Who knows, maybe our franc belonged to the donations …
