The inscription on the edge of this coin is DOMINUS PROVIDEBIT ("God will provide," Gen 22.8). Religious aphorisms were in trend since the Middle Ages and appear on numerous coins. On federal coins of Switzerland, the motto emerged as edge-inscription on the 20-franc-pieces in 1886. Edge-inscriptions were supposed to hamper forgery and to prevent coins from being abraded to gain precious metals.
