Today's republic of Macedonia is one of the successor states of Yugoslavia, from which it declared independence in 1991. The following year, succeeding of the Yugoslavian Dinar, Macedonia introduced the Macedonian denar; the name comes from the ancient Roman denarius. 1 Macedonian denar is subdivided into 100 deni, which today are not in use anymore, however, but are issued merely for collectors.
