Pressed glass beads are being made since the 16th century. This form is known as melon beads, due to their resemblance to a creased melon. On Lake Sentani in Papua a province of Indonesia, melon beads are an important part of the bride price, together with stone axes, glass bracelets and glass earrings. There, melon beads are also used for other ceremonial payments. Moreover, they serve as payments in compensation and to settle disputes.
