392 years after the birth of Christ, Emperor Theodosius declared Christianity as the state religion of the Roman Empire. 150 years later Justin I (527-565) made the final transformation from pagan-Roman to Christian-Byzantine state. He had the last temples closed, pagan books burned, and non-Christian personalities executed.

At the same time he sacralized the imperial office. From now on the emperor reigned in the immediate name of god. This destroyed the last illusions of the emperor as 'primus inter pares,' as 'first among equals'.

On this bronze coin Justin displays a globus cruciger as sign of his Christian sovereignty.
