San Marino is not a member of the European Union. However, it was in a monetary union with Italy since the year 1862. When Italy introduced the euro in 1999, it closed a contract with San Marino in the name of the EU. The little state adopted the euro just as Italy did. The coin quotas for the San-Marinese euro coins are subtracted from those of Italy.
