This tetradrachm fromt he Roman emperor Augustus (27 BC-14 AD) was produced in the Syrian capital of Antioch, supposedly in 6 AD. The emperor is depicted on the obverse. The reverse shows Tyche, the Greek goddess of fortune and destiny. At her feet swims the river god Orontes.
Originally, Tyche was a deity and patron of the sailors. Later she became the goddess of fate and in many places the city patron. This is why she is, like on this coin, often depicted wearing a mural crown on her head. Orontes, on the other hand, was a river god, the personification of the Orontes River, on which Antioch was situated.
