Visigoth Empire, Suebi, Imitation in the Name of Theodosius II, Solidus (obverse) Visigoth Empire, Suebi, Imitation in the Name of Theodosius II, Solidus (reverse)

This coin shows the influence of the late Roman Empire on the Germans. The coin is an imitation of the Roman solidus; it depicts on its obverse Emperor Theodosius, and on the reverse the emperor and his brother with the Byzantine hallmark for gold, CONOB.

The coin was probably minted by the Suebi (or Suevi), a West Germanic tribe that lived along the rivers Havel and Spree, later of the Elbe. They expanded into the Danube region and further into the Black Forest. In 406 AD the Suebi joined the Vandals, invaded Gaul and from there moved on to Spain. They went as far as Portugal, where they founded a significant empire with the capital of Braga.
