After the foundation of the Swiss Confederation in 1848, the young state initially lacked an efficient federal mint. This is why the first Swiss coins were minted in Paris and Strasbourg. In 1853, the Swiss government took over the former mint of the city of Berne. It was renamed as "Federal Mint." In 1998 the Federal Mint was reorganized and redefined as "Swissmint."
