The denga ruled the Russian monetary system from the late 14th century. A small silver coin weighing less than a gram, it persisted as the most popular imperial coin for centuries. Dengas were made by silversmiths: a short silver wire was cut off and hammered flat into a coinlike shape. This method produced very irregular shapes, and as a result dengas with complete image or inscription are extremely rare.
