This modern Russian coin of 10 kopecks depicts a spear-throwing rider, an old numismatic motif. The rider strongly resembles Saint George, the dragon killer, who can be found on many coins; the popes depicted Saint George on their money, as did Great Britain, Sweden or Russia. In Russia, Saint George is one of the most venerated saints. The modern Russian coat of arms depicts a figure of striking resemblance to Saint George in the crest that the Russian double-headed eagle bears on its chest.
