During the time of Mediation, the Swiss cantons were to observe certain standards for their coinage. All cantons were to mint geared to the same coin system: 1 Swiss franc was divided into 10 batzen and 100 rappen. A nationwide coin standard was established, after which the cantons had to mint their large coins; the mintage of small coins, however, was free out of consideration to traditional customs.
