To commemorate the 80th birthday of "Queen Mum" in 1980, the royal family gave authority to issue 5,000 sterling silver medals; a further 2,000 medals were issued in gold. A numbered certificate warranted the genuineness of each of these medals. The golden medal shown here – a donation by a friend of the MoneyMuseum – bears the number 408.
