Kingdom of Hannover, George V, Groschen 1864 (obverse) Kingdom of Hannover, George V, Groschen 1864 (reverse)

The horse on this groschen is a symbol for the city of Hannover and, a little surprising perhaps, for its connection to the British royal house. The horse is a Hannoverian, a breed often seen in competitive English riding styles and other riding competitions today. Their breeding began in 1735 in a state stud in Lower Saxony. Commissioner was Georg II, Duke of Hannover and King of Great Britain, who wanted to breed a horse suitable for all work on farms and in harness, as well as for cavalry mounts.
