Roman Republic, Litra

back

Roman Republic, Litra (obverse) Roman Republic, Litra (reverse)

This Roman bronze coin, a litra, was issued in the 220s BC. It shows on the obverse Mars, the Roman god of War; behind him is a club. The reverse depicts a galloping horse and another club. The horse was an adaption from silver coins issued during the second half of the 4th century in Syracuse, the most important city in Sicily. The clubs supposedly represent minting marks.
