Roman Republic, Denarius

back

Roman Republic, Denarius (obverse) Roman Republic, Denarius (reverse)

This Roman denarius from the year 68 BC depicts Diana, the goddess of the hunt, carrying a bow and quiver over her shoulder. In front of her is the legend GETA, the family name of the official who issued the coin. Behind her are the letters III VIR, referring to moneyer Geta's status as one of the three mint officials of the Roman Republic, the 'tres vires monetales.'

The reverse depicts a hound attacking a boar. The legend C. HOSIDI and (very worn) C. F. is the abbreviated first part of the moneyer's name, Gaius Hosidi Geta, son of Gaius.
