Acanthus was located on the most eastern of the three fingers of the Chalcidice. Toward the end of the 6th century BC, the city supposedly came under Persian rule, because the Acanthian coins showed strong Persian influence. The lion attacking a bull was a traditional motif in middle eastern art. The impressive scene remained the topic on the coins of Acanthus for more than a century.
