Tis coin originates from Larissa in Thessaly, a city in the wild north of Greece. From the beginning of the 4th century Thessalian engravers were, as elsewhere, receptive to Sicilian influences. The obverse of this coin actually depicts the head of the nymph Larissa, but it is a copy of the famous nymph Arethusa on coins from Syracuse. The reverse features a horseman; horses were immensely important in the country of Thessaly, and for this reason appear on many coins of Larissa, sometimes with and sometimes without a rider.
