Byzantine Empire, Justinian II, Solidus, Constantinople (obverse) Byzantine Empire, Justinian II, Solidus, Constantinople (reverse)

Sixteen years old and already emperor of the East Roman Empire: This was Justinian, when he succeeded his father Constantine IV to the throne in the year 685 (until 695). The young emperor was cruel and had a despotic nature. This trait and his irresponsible financial policy made him many enemies. In 695, Justinian lost his power in the course of a rebellion. The rebels cut off the former emperor's nose and then banished him to one of the Crimean islands. Justinian managed to regain power ten years later. This coin was issued during his first reign.
