Republic Berne, 4 Ducats 1796

Republic Berne, 4 Ducats 1796 (obverse) Republic Berne, 4 Ducats 1796 (reverse)

Multiple ducats like this one were not issued for commercial purposes, but as valuable gifts and objects of prestige. These precious coins were struck with great care and as they were not circulated are well preserved.

Berne struck its last series of ducats in 1798. This coin is thus one of the last of its kind. On the obverse is the Berne coat of arms bearing a crown. The inscription reads RESPUBLICA BERNENSIS (republic of Berne). The inscription on the reverse is BENEDICTUS SIT IEHOVA DEUS means Praised be God Jehova.
