Roman Republic, Victoriatus

back

Roman Republic, Victoriatus (obverse) Roman Republic, Victoriatus (reverse)

This coin is a victoriatus, a Roman trade coin. Unlike other Roman coins it did not bear any indication of value. The Roman monetary system was based on bronze coins; and since the victoriatus circulated mostly outside the Roman currency area, an indication of value based on Roman bronze would not have made much sense.

The name victoriatus derives from the image on the coin's reverse, which always featured the goddess Victoria crowning a trophy. The obverse bore the head of the Roman god Jupiter wearing a laurel wreath.
