Roman Republic, Denarius

Roman Republic, Denarius (obverse) Roman Republic, Denarius (reverse)

This Roman denarius shows the head of Roma and a pitcher as mint control mark. Below the goddess's chin is the mark X for the coin's value of 10 asses.

The reverse depicts a scene of Roman mythology. The Roman she-wolf, her head turned, is just about to suckle the twins Romulus and Remus. In the backfround is a fig tree with three birds. Standing nearby is Faustulus, the shepherd who according to legend adopted the twins and raised them. He is identified by the inscription FOSTLVS. On the right edge of the coin are the initials SEX. POM. for the moneyer Sextus Pompeius.
