Roman Republic, Denarius

Roman Republic, Denarius (obverse) Roman Republic, Denarius (reverse)

Both faces of this Roman denarius from the year of 54 BC depict a Curule chair. That was the official chair of senior Roman magistrates, and as such stood for official powers.

The coin motives commemorate the grandfathers of the issuer of this coin, Quintus Pompeius Rufus. They were both consuls in 88 BC. One was the general and dictator Lucius Cornelius Sulla; the other was called, just as our moneyer, Quintus Pompeius Rufus.
