Vratislaus II, also Wratislaus, was in the 11th century duke and then king of Bohemia (1061-1092). He was the first bohemian ruler who could call himself a king. He obtained the title from the emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, of which Bohemia was part. The title was as yet a personal privilege, however, and thus nonhereditary. Only a century later, under Otakar, did Bohemia officially become a kingdom.

This denarius shows on one face a hand with a scepter and the inscription WRATISLVS. The other face bears a head and the caption WENCESLAUS. This referred to Duke Wenceslaus, the patriarch of the Přemyslid dynasty from which Vratislaus II descended. Wenceslaus was shortly after his death elevated to sainthood, and is to this day the patron saint of Bohemia.
