The popes started to issue their own coins from early on. They often bore the image of Saint Peter. This apostle was regarded as the founder of the Catholic Church, and as the first bishop of Rome, where he is said to have suffered martyrdom. From about 200 a certain point on the Vatican Hill was worshipped as Saint Peter's grave; later the Basilica of Saint Peter was built on that spot.
